Reproduction-operators in data orientated, evolutionary art

Mutation and Recombination

Within the two series metamorphoses and spaces the two classes of the reproduction operators mutation and recombination are differently weighted and specified. In both series the individuals are data orientated, the attribute components are filled with pixel data. For an easier description we define the recombination operation as an operation which uses two parents to generate one offspring.

Generally two kinds of different reproduction operations can be seen:

· · · · · · · ·
Color transformation

The color transformation modifies the position of pixels in the rgb-color space. Hence this operation may be interpreted as an application of a global color filter, where global may be interpreted in such a way, that the operation is applied on those pixels, which are selected within an exemption operation.

Geometric Transformation

Operations like rotation, scaling and translation (movement) are called geometric transformation as well as the selection of segments of the images with specified attributes like, for instance the selection of all pixels of a picture, which are similar to a specified pixel. To the local variations modification operations can be counted. Those mutation operators are used within the metamorphoses cycle as major operation.

· · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · ·
Crossover with masks

The recombination uses operators which can be compared to the crossover operations in the theory of genetic algorithms. Segments of one parent image are selected and form with a complementary part of the second image a daughter image. Using geometric operations, mainly used in the space series, masks play the major role. Here single individuals are furnished with masks by the artist, which are selected during the recombination process.

Fuzzy marking off

Both method classes - color and geometry- are not easy to distinguish. Manual exemption can be seen as a geometric operation, whereas exemption based upon color information can be seen as a color transformation.
