Abstract expressionism and automatism

Action-painting is a type of the non-geometric, abstract painting and can be a special case of the abstract expressionism. As a former type can be seen the automatism of the surrealists, in which you paint spontaneous to except a wanted influence of the artist and thus to manifest the unconscious elements. In the area of the surrealism you paint representational, or better said, the painted patterns are interpreted representational, to give an symbolic meaning to the unconscious elements.

Random elements in the painting process

In the front of the action-painting stands the painting process, in which you lay the colour spontaneously on the ground, whereby the picture as a result often has a documentary function. In the painting process elements by chance are integrated, that result from a quick and spontaneous behaviour of the artist, and, as well, from the painting technique, like, for example, the dripping.
